Four Crosses
At EAster time, especially on Good Friday,
we think about the Cross of Calvary. Actually we think and talk about three crosses which stood on that hill
called Golgotha, not too far from old Jerusalem. On one of those crosses, the Lord Jesus died as the Lamb
of God when He took upon Himself the sin of the world. (John 1:29) On the other two crosses were two criminals, who
were crucified with Jesus, one on His right, and the other on His left. We mostly speak about those three crosses, but in
this tract I want to draw your attention to a fourth cross. This fourth cross is the symbol of humility, self-denial and sacrificial
service. The Lord Jesus spoke about it when He said, "If anyone would come after me, he must deny himself and take up his
cross and follow me." (Matt. 16:24) We also read about this cross in Matthew 10:38, where Jesus said, " ... and anyone who
does not take his cross and follow me is not worthy of me."
We know that crucifixion was the method used by the Romans
to execute criminals. This was one of the most painful, shameful, inhumane, and cruel methods of execution. People suffered
for many hours, (and in some cases for days!) before they died. It was this way, in such agony and in indescribable suffering,
that our Lord Jesus died. Calvary is best known today because of the fact that God's Son, the Lord Jesus
Christ, died on the cross when He became the Saviour of the world....
